What is D&D?
Ever imagined what it would be like to attend Hogwarts, or spend a day as a character in your favorite video game? Dungeons and Dragons gives you the tools to drop into a fantasy world with complete agency, affecting the story and landscape with your actions - limited only by a roll of the dice.
It’s a collaborative storytelling game traditionally played by at least 4 players, with one player acting as the Dungeon Master. The Dungeon Master is the story’s narrator, verbally describing the imaginary world of play with the assistance of maps, miniatures, rulebooks, and pre-prepared written material. Players confront challenges by using their wit and rolling dice, which determine a character’s successes and failures throughout a session.
Dice are rolled after a player does something that affects the world around them. If they roll higher than the challenge’s Difficulty Class, or DC, they succeed; otherwise, they fail. Certain characters are more skilled than others at certain things, and those particular skills are chosen when a player builds or selects their character. Successes & failures are of equal value - everything in the world of play is in constant flux.
